The Westinghouse Contempra IV fan is part of Westinghouse’s “Hugger” series of fans and is ideal for rooms with low ceilings because it hangs down from the roof less than common fans do.The Contempra IV gives powerful cooling and air with its 52 inch, five blade design. The blades are reversible, with one side being white and the other white washed pine, versatility in home decorating. Both sides coordinate handsomely with the fan’s antique white finish.The fan will include a four light lighting kit with the four globes resting below and at the center of the fan in a square pattern, welcome light when needed. We like the look, the cost and how it works (very calm and stable, also flush mountable). You get the best bang of your money. A month ago, we bought another one from Amazon.Com. In the product description it states using “standard base light bulbs”. After opening the package, we found that it uses candelabra established light bulbs. For this, we returned it to because we’d like to use more generic merchandise for easy light bulb substitute.

After talking to some number of sales persons and electricians at local Home Depot stores, I found all new roof fans changed light bulbs to either candelabra base or Intermediate base (or E 17 Intermediate) in recent years to bypass an energy saving prerequisite forced on Standard Medium Base light bulbs. Now, there’s no particular energy saving prerequisite on the candelabra or Intermediate base light bulbs. The downside of using none standard type bulbs is that you’re locked in to purchase them from restricted number of dealers. It may be hard to find substitute bulbs.

July, 2009 UPDATE
Still running the fan just day and night, reversing the direction in the winter to blow upward and using the light function for at least a couple of hours/day and it’s working smoothly and steadily, with no shakiness or loss of strength. The wood panels have not faded, the brass has not tarnished, and I’m hardly as consistent about keeping it clean as I’m about keeping it on! one of the best home purchases I have made.

Have been totally happy with them, installation was easy, they look great, and are calm. I had Hunter roof fans in my old place, and was a bit worried that the Westinghouse fans may not be quite the quality, but I was pleasantly surprised to find them every bit as good as the Hunters.

It is a nice looking fan, forty bucks cheaper AND measurably quieter than the one at restoration hardware. Nice deal. One little thing, though. There is a click click at some point on the rotation. Every time it hits that point click click. I returned one and replaced it with another, got it home and same thing click click. At the same point on the turn. It is like a slow steady drip on a faucet. Many people can ignore it. Me.It drives me crazy.

UPDATE five STARS tried still another much costly fan that was too deafening, returned it, bought 3rd Hunter Fan from LNT, same problem click click, was done with Hunter, shot off a fast email on their web site just to let them know of the defect, turns out they have pretty decent buyer service, sent me another fan, NO CLICKS, at least not in the time that i wd have usually started hearing clicks. If you do not hear from me again, I am happy and you may be able to think about this fan, I believe, stylish, the quietest of the many I have tried, and at a great price.

The construction is sturdier and the look is appealing and clean. While not totally silent, the “whispering” motor isn’t bothersome. On the 1st (of three) speeds, the fan is efficient. In short, I am happy. Hurray for Hunter.

I have run this fan 24/7 for some number of months and continue to be very happy with its durability. It sits on the edge of a counter, tough, stable, and nostalgically fashionable. While oscillating a full 180 degrees or shooting a straight stream of cooled air, it continues to run silently. Like every other oscillating fan I have owned, this fan will click when it reaches the end of its oscillation cycle if the switch isn’t totally engaged: simple solution = finish pushing/pulling switch. :) I strongly recommend Hunter’s 12 inch table top fan.

I sleep with a fan on every night I find the humming sound encouraging and I love a nice cool breeze during the night well, this is the fan! My old fan was so deafening and rattled during the whole night, this fan is calm and has excellent features!

The oscillating feature works perfectly and smoothly, you hear no indication that the fan is turning. The timer feature is nice, but I do not tend to use it, so I can not really comment. The speed settings are great at it is most powerful speed, it is not mind boggling deafening. As for the ION feature, who knows if this really works sounds like a bunch of hooey to me :)

It could be nice if the price were a bit lower, but after suffering through years of cheap, horribly made fans, the price tag is well worth it to me.

I work from home, to boot, so I have typically got the TV and laptop on. Needless to I am in the room alot and thee is many of “heat” resources on in the room most of the time.

I am not someone that likes the frigid dryness of an AC, so when i start noticing the heat (usually at about 80 degrees) i kick on the AC for about ten minutes , then I shut it off again till it starts to get hot. Typically about once every hour or I do this.

With this fan, I have not kicked the AC on once. The room drops about two degrees with the fan constantly circulating air (i’ve got a temperature gauge in my room) and its low wattage (35 on low, 39/40 on medium, and 46 on high and on HIGH it reaaaally moves many crazy air) beats my AC any day (500 watts on low). I can literally run this fan for twelve hours and it is still far less wattage than my AC at one hour.

The oscillation feature is awesome, you do not hear it moving at all the way many tower fans and oscillating fans may be heard. If this will degrade over time, I’m not sure it most probably will as all things degrade but for now it is working perfect. The ionizer feature is really only going to enhance two things the gathering of dust in a room and the “freshness” of the air. If you do not notice the ionizer doing anything, then congrats, you already have a new smelling room that is not that dusty. I notice that it does work though bc I have got a big total of cardboard boxes in this room (i sell and ship things for a living) and cardboard sure can stink. Well this ionizer kicks that odor out and circulates a cool new breeze.

The timer mode works like a charm and the “sleep” mode, is kinda neat, but kinda strange as i would not recommend it for sleeping. It works erratically between low, medium, high, off and gives more of a natural breeze than anything that i’d recommend sleeping on. The constant variation of sound of the fans (which are pretty calm, but at night they’ll seem louder bc everything is quieter) will most probably keep you up if you use it in the bedroom. For a natural breeze though, it is a good choice setting.

The fan is powerful, on low you may be able to feel a breeze from about ten feet away. On medium, about 15 feet away, and on high about 20 to 25 feet away. It is pretty awesome :) the remote feature is great too though at times, when its oscillating, it may be hard to get it at the “right” time and line it up. For the most part, that is going to be a problem with an oscillating remote controlled fan.

Overall, its a superb fan and i really recommend purchasing it.
